Your carbon footprint, or a company’s carbon footprint,  is an estimation of all of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from daily activities, transactions, or operations – such as a flight. The CO₂ emissions of a flight mainly depend on the aircraft used, the distance flown, and the number of passengers and cargo the aircraft carries.

Our CO₂ emissions calculations are based on International Air Transport Association (IATA) Recommended Practice - RP 1726 and take into account parameters such as all scheduled flights, aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, and historical load factors for more than 400 airlines.

Carbon offsetting is a mechanism that enables individuals and organizations to advance climate action by supporting certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Certified projects issue carbon credits, which act as an instrument for selling or trading the project’s associated removal or reduction impact. Each carbon credit represents a single unit of GHG emissions (being one (1) tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e)) that is reduced or removed from the atmosphere or the carbon cycle. A unit of GHG emissions can be reduced or removed through various methods or project types.

Carbon offsetting provides financing for these certified projects. The purchase of a carbon credit enables the buyer to contribute to these projects, and one often purchases offsets in an amount equivalent to an estimated carbon footprint.

A project's ability to issue offsets depends on a set of rigorous conditions – in order for a project to issue offsets, the emission reductions or removals must be validated as additional, measurable, auditable, permanent, and unique.

What is the price of a carbon unit and why does it vary?

A variety of factors contribute to the price of an individual carbon credit. In the context of verified carbon offsets or carbon removals, the primary driver is the direct cost that the project incurs to bring about the reduction or removal of GHG emissions. This is a function of the type, scale, and location of the project.

Additionally, market demand for carbon credits from a particular project and the availability or supply of such credits will also impact the price – and this may change over time. Organizations primarily seek out projects whose characteristics align with their missions, customer bases or the communities in which they operate, and certain project types that have characteristics common to a larger pool of such groups will be in greater demand than others.

By joining our program, your contribution supports certified projects selected by TAP. The percentage of allocation to each project, defined by TAP, varies depending on factors such as costs and types of projects as well as its geographical location.
